La Biblioteca Digital Mundial fue un proyecto de la Biblioteca del Congreso de los Estados Unidos, con el apoyo de la UNESCO y contribuciones de bibliotecas, archivos, museos, instituciones educativas y organizaciones internacionales de todo el mundo. La WDL buscó preservar y compartir algunos de los objetos culturales más importantes del mundo, aumentando el acceso a importantes tesoros culturales y documentos históricos para permitir el descubrimiento, la erudición y el uso.

World Digital Library was a project of the United States Library of Congress, with the support of UNESCO and contributions from libraries, archives, museums, educational institutions, and international organizations around the world. The WDL sought to preserve and share some of the world's most important cultural objects, increasing access to significant cultural treasures and historical documents to enable discovery, scholarship, and use.

La BND promueve y participa en la difusión internacional de los contenidos digitales de las bibliotecas portuguesas, a través del  RNOD - Registro Nacional de Objetos Digitales, que agrega metadatos de más de 40 instituciones y los difunde a portales internacionales como  Europeana , la  Biblioteca Digital del Patrimonio Ibérico americano , la  Biblioteca Digital Luso-Brasileira , o la   Biblioteca Digital Mundial .

The BND promotes and participates in the international dissemination of the digital contents of Portuguese libraries, through the RNOD - National Registry of Digital Objects, which aggregates metadata from more than 40 institutions and disseminates them to international portals such as Europeana, the Digital Library of American Iberian Heritage, the Luso-Brasileira Digital Library, or the World Digital Library.
